2025 Required Materials and Guiding Questions

As you read, watch, and listen, reflect on the following guiding questions below each item and discuss your thoughts with your team. No written response is needed unless your team decides to capture the group’s thoughts for reference later. During the conference, we will refer to these materials.

  1. Please watch The Teenage American Dream – A high school student’s reflection on the American Dream and how it is now different for this generation.
    1. What is “The American Dream”? How do your identity and your experiences shape your definition of “the american dream”?
  2. Please read the article, “Be Down With the Brown.”
    1. What are two techniques or strategies that the student activists used to create change in their schools that you could incorporate into your action planning?
    2. Did you notice any parallel concerns that the Raza students had about their schools that also ring true about some of the systemic issues that you might encounter in your school experience?
  3. Please read the article, “Each Generation Must Discover Its Own Mission.”
    1. What would you say is worthy of your delegation’s mission to address in your action plan to improve your school for all students?
    2. In the article it advanced a famous saying, “If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.” Do you think there is any truth to that statement? If so, how can you engage parts of the community often overlooked as part of the solution to support your action plan and its goals and objectives?
